When you come to Cape Town, there’s plenty to see and do, and most activities are chilled and relaxing. Perhaps it’s time to step out of your comfort zone and do something different. Here is one suggestion that will add a little adrenaline rush to your holiday. Whether you are an extreme-sport junky or a brave octogenarian, all you need is good health and a dash of courage to turn a half day outing into an ultimate, never-to-be-forgotten joyride.

If you take a 40 minute drive up the west coast of Cape Town, you will come to the picturesque coastal town of Melkbostrand. A few kilometres further, turn onto a dirt road and minutes later you will arrive at the home of Skydive Cape Town.

A tandem jump affords you all the excitement of solo, without the need for extensive training. These are professionals with thousands of jumps under their belt. You are in safe hands.

On arriving at Skydive Cape Town, there is documentation to fill in and some pre-jump preparation to do. While waiting for your turn, you will have a chance to watch the promo videos, calming unsettled nerves as you see everyone else enjoying themselves. You’ll also see other jumpers coming back down to earth.

Safety is of paramount importance. Staff are experienced, reassuring and friendly. They begin by explaining how the process works, what exactly will happen and what you have to do. You are paired up with a tandem master who will partner you throughout the process. If you have any questions or concerns, they are happy to answer them. You are kitted out with the necessary equipment, which once you have on, is checked and double checked. Skydive Cape Town have three planes used for their jumps. The flight is about 20 minutes long. During that time, you are reassured and encouraged to enjoy the spectacular views of Cape Town, Table Mountain and Robben Island. There’s nothing like seeing the Mother City from the air. Your partners for the jump will remind you of the drill, so they are sure you understand what will happen. The adrenaline will be pumping through your veins, the excitement will be high and the nerves taut. Your parachute partner has experienced all the rookie’s emotions. They’ve seen tears and sheer terror! You can expect kindness and understanding.

Once the plane has arrived at 3000 metres, the command will be given for the door to be opened. Then it will be ACTION!  With goggles on, you will be inched to the exit, the instructor will tell you to lean back and before you know it, you will be out the door. A rush of air like no other and a magnificent unobstructed view. After free falling for about 30 seconds, the chute chord will be pulled and the most amazing silence and peace ensues. At this time, you’ll have the opportunity to appreciate all you can see. It’s exhilarating and surreal – you are floating above the earth, gently descending – altogether an experience you’ll never forget. Five minutes later, you’ll land back on land, gently touching down on soft sand.

It’s suggested you skydive early on in your holiday – you’ll be smiling for days!
